Webinar: Rights of Nature - From Anthropocentrism to Ecocentrism

On March 11th, 2024, Riverkeeper hosted a webinar on the rights of nature. CDER’s Thomas Linzey joined Riverkeeper Board Member Karenna Gore of the Center for Earth Ethics and Riverkeeper Advisory Board Member Steven “Owl” Smith of the Ramapo Munsee Nation for the panel discussion.

The webinar included an overview of the rights of nature, situated it in the context of Riverkeeper’s work, and gave up-to-date information about rights of nature jurisprudence and litigation on the national and international level.

The rights of nature movement is focused on securing legal rights of natural entities such as rivers, forests, ecosystems, and species. It also encompasses a larger shift in mindset, away from viewing nature as property or resources for human use, and toward viewing nature as having intrinsic value and agency.
