Animal Grantmakers Conference - Thomas Linzey: Lives Not Their Own

CDER’s Senior Legal Counsel Thomas Linzey spoke at the Animal Grantmakers' 2022 Conference held in Berkeley, California.

As part of this TED Talk-like series, Thomas shared how his failure to protect the environment under existing environmental law launched a global movement to recognize the rights of the environment itself, or the rights of nature. His inspirational journey of moving away from a Western legal mindset in which the natural world is considered as property existing to serve humans, to one in which we understand ourselves to be part of nature and in which nature must the highest legal protections, provides a backdrop for a fundamental transformation in environmental law and human governance toward nature.
