National Geographic: This Toad Is Fighting for Survival—and It Has a Lawyer

‍Hugo Echeverría, our Ecuador-based attorney, is featured in this article on the Jambato toad. The rights of the toad are being defended in court in Ecuador, under the rights of nature constitutional provisions, as it faces possible extinction from road construction.

Article 73 of Ecuador’s Constitution, which CDER’s founders worked on in 2008, includes the requirement to prevent species from extinction as part of guaranteeing the rights of nature.

As Hugo states in the article, that if toad goes extinct, Ecuador “will be responsible for not having prevented such extinction.”
