Session on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights Advisory Opinion (AO-32/25)
On August 15, 2025, the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights (CDER) participated in one of the first academic events organized in Latin America to analyze the Advisory Opinion 32/25 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on the climate emergency, including impacts on rights of nature.
The event was organized by the law schools of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM), and Universidad Iberoamericana (IBERO).
Under the title "First Reflections," the two-day event covered the most important topics addressed in the Advisory Opinion, including the rights of nature.
In this context, CDER's external attorney Hugo Echeverría shared the CDER's experience at the hearing convened by the Inter-American Court in April 2024, where the CDER advocated before the Court for the inclusion of the rights of nature in the Court's legal analysis.
This effectively occurred, as stated in paragraphs 279 to 286 of the Advisory Opinion, addressing the recognition of these new rights, their autonomy, and their compatibility with the current legal system. The Court made an express reference to the Ecuadorian model for these rights, as well as to the models applied in other countries on the American continent. CDER is actively engaged in outreach activities related to the Advisory Opinion 32/25, which was publicly released on 3 July 2025.
