National Congress of American Indians Annual Convention

Panel: Recognizing the Rights of Manoomin/Psíŋ and Other More Than Human Relatives: Establishing Legal Rights and Protections for Wild Rice and Rivers

The annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is this November in Seattle, Washington.

On Thursday, November 20th, the NCAI will host a panel on the Rights of Manoomin/Psíŋ - wild rice.

Moderated by the Native Governance Center, the panel will feature Tribal Attorney Frank Bibeau, Director of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights (CDER) Tribal Rights of Nature Program. Frank assisted the White Earth Band of Chippewa to adopt the first Rights of Manoomin tribal law, and brought the first Rights of Manoomin enforcement case into a tribal court.

Leanna Goose, a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, will also speak on her work to protect wild rice in Minnesota.
